You can mix the two but with caution. Be sure to check the ingredients of your moisturizer in case retinol isn't a good mix. To apply a serum with retinol correctly, smooth it onto clean skin before your moisturizer. Your serum will have a thinner consistency than your moisturizer, which is what determines the application order. Your skin will be extra sensitive to UV, so be sure to wear SPF too.
